The Mount St. Joseph boys basketball team was in the midst of another challenging road game at Calvert Hall on Wednesday, when senior guard Jaylen Adams decided it was his time to step up.

The Cardinals were paying close attention to fellow senior guard Phil Booth in overtime, leaving Adams with a little more space and time along the perimeter.

He found nothing but net on a 3-pointer for the first points of the extra time and then followed with two more driving baskets. It got the No. 3 Gaels on the right track to come away with a resilient, 62-57 overtime win over No. 9 Calvert Hall.

Booth finished with a team-high 19 points and Adams scored nine of his 14 points in overtime as the Gaels improved to 6-1 overall, 3-1 in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference and 2-1 in the Baltimore Catholic League.

Calvert Hall, which showed it belonged among the top teams in the two leagues, fell to 6-1 overall, 2-1 in the MIAA A Conference and 1-1 in the BCL.

Junior guard Nico Clareth took game-high honors with 20 points for the home team, but it was Adams who stepped up in the most important minutes.

"They were double teaming Phil, so I was just trying to do whatever I could," Adams said. "[The three] felt great. I missed a lot early and when that fell, it just felt great."

Tightly-contested throughout — Calvert Hall had the biggest lead at 22-15 in the second quarter, which ended tied at 26 — the Gaels took a 44-38 lead on a strong drive from Booth with 5:56 to play in the fourth quarter.

But the Cardinals would answer behind Clareth and junior guard Drew Edwards (13 points) to stay close. After Clareth had a steal and layup to tie the game at 49 with 2:28 to play, both teams went cold to send the game into overtime with the same score.

On the Gaels' second possession, Adams got free on the right for the pivotal three and then attacked the basket on the next two possessions to build a 56-51 lead with 1:08 left. The Gaels made 6-of-8 free throws in the final minute of overtime to secure the victory.

As Adams was walking back to the locker room, Mount St. Joseph coach Pat Clatchey told him: "That's what you're capable of."

"He played like a senior that wanted to win on the road," Clatchey said. "He stepped up and hit the big shots.

"Calvert Hall is a good team, they're going to be a load for a lot of teams, including us. We told our guys that winning on the road is a mindset, a mentality. And I thought we stepped up and grew as a team tonight."

Sophomore forward Daveyon Barnes added 10 points for the Gaels, while Calvert Hall got 12 points from junior forward Evan Phoenix.
