Baltimore Fire Department officials identified the woman who died in a Northeast Baltimore apartment fire on Thursday as Laverne Allen, 54.

Firefighters found the victim unconscious in her apartment in the 4400 block of Marble Road after it caught fire early Thursday, and she was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Allen's death brings to 19 the number of fire fatalities this year, after three years of declines that brought the figure to a low of 12 last year. The number of fire deaths statewide is also up, to 63 so far this year, compared to 48 during the same period last year and 53 for all of 2012, according to state officials.

Neighbors previously told The Baltimore Sun that the woman who died had lived in the complex for a few years and was friendly. The manager of the eight-unit Marble Hall Gardens apartments said the building was condemned after the fire.
