Leaf burning pollutes the air [Letter]

December 04, 2013

The recent code orange air quality alert is not surprising ("Code Orange air quality alert issued, relatively rare outside summertime," Dec. 2). As I drove through Carroll County last Sunday I noticed at least five properties where large amounts of leaves were being openly burned, sending vast plumes of white smoke into the air.

If it was happening in Carroll, then it was probably also happening in Frederick and other western counties. Open burning is illegal, but some people just don't like the government telling them what to do. Where was law enforcement?
