Wrestlers to watch in 2013-14

Tejon Anthony
Western Tech, 138 pounds, senior

Will be looking to rebound from an upset loss in the second round of the state tournament last year. Won the state championship as a sophomore. Has 76 career wins in two years on varsity.

Logan Breitenbach
Archbishop Splading, 152 pounds, junior

The MIAA and Maryland Independent Schools champion last year, Breitenbach will again be pushed by McDonogh’s Toby Hague. Breitenbach will be the unquestioned leader of the Cavaliers.

Cory Daniel
River Hill, 220 pounds, senior

A state champion at 195 pounds last year, Daniel finished the year 42-0 and was dominant in the state tournament. He will wrestle at the University of North Carolina next season.

Ryan Friedman
St. Paul’s, 125 pounds, junior

Won the MIAA and Maryland Independent Schools titles at 113 pounds last year in dominant fashion. Finished second at National Prep tournament last season. Friedman is a strong and smart wrestler, who moves well.

Anthony Genco
Hereford, 126 pounds, senior

Finished second in the State Class 2A/1A tournament at 113 pounds last year. The Bulls will rely on his leadership.

Cameron Harrell
McDonogh, 145/152 pounds, junior

Transferred to McDonogh from Broadneck, where he won the State Class 4A/3A title at 132 pounds. Finished the year 32-1 last season for the Bruins.

T.K. Megonigal
McDonogh, 113 pounds, sophomore

Won the state private schools title and MIAA A conference title last year as a freshman. Finished third at National Preps last season. Ended his freshman year with a 38-9 record.

Jack Mutchnik
St. Paul’s, 126 pounds, senior

Mutchnik won both the MIAA and MIS crowns last year as a junior, and will look to become a four-time MIAA champion this year. Also won National Prep championship last season. Has committed to wrestle for American next season.

Steven Schmitz
South Carroll, 182 pounds, senior

Won state championship last season for South Carroll with a 43-0 record at 182 pounds. Will be counted on to provide leadership for a young team that should be the best in Carroll County.

Jake Utz
Winters Mill, 220 pounds, senior

Was a state runner-up at 285 pounds in Class 2A/1A last year, but will drop down a weight class this season. Is surprisingly quick and light on his feet for an upper-weight wrestler.
