A man was found lying in the middle of the street with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest by an officer on patrol in South Baltimore Saturday morning.

The man, who had no identification on him at the time, was later pronounced dead at a hospital, police said. An officer found him at about 4 a.m. in the 1000 block of E. Patapsco Avenue, between the Brooklyn neighborhood and the Fairfield industrial area.

When the officer found the man, he was not breathing and the officer called for an ambulance, police said. Medics who arrived discovered he had been shot multiple times on his upper torso.

Police said that before the officer found the man, they had gotten no calls to 911 reporting gunshots or a shooting.

The homicide is the 216th reported by Baltimore police this year. In all of last year, 217 people were murdered in Baltimore.
