Report: Navy's Ferguson retires after concussions

Navy safety Chris Ferguson has retired after suffering multiple concussions, The (Annapolis) Capital reported. "Chris met with the doctors and talked with his family, and that's the decision he's come to," said coach Ken Niumatalolo, according to the newspaper. "We're supporting him. There's more to life than football. First and foremost, we want to make sure he is healthy." The 6-foot-2, 195-pound junior sat out wins against Hawaii and South Alabama the past two weeks after suffering a concussion in a 38-34 loss at Notre Dame on Nov. 2. He played in seven games this season, recording 32 tackles. From second through fifth grade, he suffered from Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the nervous system.

More football: McDaniel senior running back Joe Rollins was named Division III Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Year. He had a conference-high 1,374 rushing yards as well as 13 touchdowns, seven 100-yard rushing games and three 200-yard rushing games. He was a unanimous selection to the All-Centennial first team. ... The list of finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award was narrowed to five. The finalists are Clemson's Tajh Boyd , Fresno State's Derek Carr , Northern Illinois' Jordan Lynch , Alabama's A.J. McCarron and Georgia's Aaron Murray. Candidates must be college seniors or fourth-year juniors on schedule to graduate with their class. ... Maryland's Will Likely was selected as Division I Eastern College Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.

Men's cross country: After capturing the program's first-ever Mideast Regional title over the weekend in Allentown, Pa., Johns Hopkins retained the No. 8 ranking in the Division III U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Associationpoll. ... UMBC sophomore Hassan Omar was named to the Division I USTFCCCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region team. He placed 22nd overall at this past weekend's NCAA Mid-Atlantic regional at Lehigh, finishing the 10K course with a school-record time of 30 minutes, 30 seconds.

Women's cross country: Johns Hopkins remained No. 1 in the nation for the 12th straight week after all seven of its runners finished in the top 35 at the NCAA Regionals in Allentown, Pa., on Saturday.

Field hockey: No. 1 Maryland's Maxine Fluharty, Natalie Hunter, Ali McEvoy, Sarah Sprink and Jill Witmer made the National Field Hockey Coaches Association's All-Mid-Atlantic Region first team, and Anna Dessoye and Katie Gerzabek made the second team. Witmer was named NFHCA Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Year. She is one of five finalists for National Player of the Year, and she recently was chosen as Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Also for the Terps, Missy Meharg was named ACC Coach of the Year for the seventh time.

Women's swimming: Mount St. Mary's Haley Fournier was selected as Division I Northeast Conference Swimmer of the Week.

Towson U. to host Under Armour Classic on July 12

Under Armour Inc. and Corrigan Sports Enterprises Inc. announced that the Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic will be held July 12 at Towson's University's Johnny Unitas Stadium. The boys and girls games will feature 88 of the nation's top seniors, who are selected by a panel of experts at Inside Lacrosse magazine. The yearlong process includes input from college and high school coaches from across the country as well as nominations from the public. All-America nominations for the class of 2014 can be submitted to insidelacrosse.com/underarmour. Last year 44former Under Armour All-Americans earned first-, second- or third-team All-America honors at the college level. The Under Armour All-America games will be held at in conjunction with the Under Armour Underclass tournament July 11 to 13. The Underclass tryouts and tournament, widely recognized as the premier recruiting event of the summer, will once again feature competing male and female regional teams from Baltimore, Long Island, the Midwest, New England, New Jersey, Philadelphia, South, Upstate New York, Washington and the West.
