Eastbound Route 40 in Edgewood is shut down near Sand Pebble Drive after a fatal car crash Wednesday morning, fire department officials in Harford County said.

A car overturned and its occupant was trapped amid the multi-vehicle crash at around 6:30 a.m., according to fire officials from the Harford County fire department and Joppa-Magnolia volunteer fire company.

More details on the person who died in the crash were unavailable. The cause is under investigation.

All lanes of eastbound Route 40 between Sand Pebble Drive and West Shore Drive will likely be closed for several hours as authorities investigate the crash.

A multi-car crash in downtown Baltimore closed roads in the area around East Baltimore and South streets, but the roads were reopened at around 9:20 a.m. Traffic was severe downtown for much of the morning commute.

The downtown crash involved an off-duty Baltimore police officer driving an unmarked car, who was struck from behind by a truck running a red light, police said. The police officer was taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center with serious injuries.
