Why isn't volleyball part of Rash Field plans? [Letter]

November 20, 2013

I am offended by your Nov. 17 editorial on the new Inner Harbor plan ("Inner Harbor reborn". Your implication that the Baltimore Beach Volleyball League at Rash Field is just another in a "hodgepodge of attractions" is insulting.

For 10 years, this league has anchored the southern part of the Inner Harbor, providing a healthy, fun sport for thousands of city and non-city residents. Every night of the week people come together to play, then go out and spend money at local establishments. The league is truly a unique attraction to have in a city center.

Perhaps you should have referenced the many surveys over the last several years in which residents voted to keep volleyball in the new harbor plans. Neither you nor the Greater Baltimore Committee even acknowledged those surveys. One look at the comments on GBC's website says it all, with most postings showing dismay at the volleyball omission. Maybe our voice was edited out in favor of those with larger bankrolls. The efforts to bring city neighborhoods together will be harmed by omitting the league from the harbor's new plans.
