Towson forward Benimon named CAA Player of the Week

Towson senior forward Jerrelle Benimon was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Benimon averaged 21.3 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in Towson's 2-1 week. Benimon scored a career-high 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a 75-69 victory over Temple on Thursday; tallied 21 points, 14 boards and a career-high six assists in a 95-75 win over Morgan State last Tuesday; and had a team-best 11 points in a 78-44 loss at Villanova on Sunday.

More men's: Coppin State (1-2) lost to Wagner (2-2) on Monday night at home, 102-87. Senior guard Andre Armstrong led the Eagles with 19 points, while senior guards Latif Rivers and Kenneth Ortiz scored 20 and 12 points, respectively. Ortiz added 10 assists. Marcus Burton added 19 points, including five 3-pointers, off the bench. Wagner used a 15-4 run to start the second half to pull away from the Eagles. ... Senior forward Brendan McFall scored 28 points in 24 minutes of play to lead St. Mary's past host Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham, 81-66. Don Hill had 19 points and Nick LaGuerre (Lansdowne) added 16 for the Seahawks (1-0). Trevor Sykes led the Devils (0-2) with 15 points. ... UMBC freshman guard Rodney Elliott (John Carroll) was named America East Conference Rookie of the Week. Elliott scored 24 of his 26 points after halftime as the Retrievers overcame a school-record 23-point deficit to defeat visiting Mount St. Mary's, 90-84, in overtime Sunday. He added five assists, six rebounds and a pair of steals. Elliott also scored 19 points to open the week in a victory over Eastern. ... Chancellor Barnard (Glenelg Country), Colton Bishop and Cam Gregory have signed national letters of intent to join Loyola in the fall.

Women's: Morgan State lost to host North Carolina State (4-0), 94-52. Kody Burke finished with a game-high 23 points for the Wolfpack, while Danielle Forrest scored 17 and Tracey Carrington (Dundalk) added 15 for the Bears (0-2). ... Maryland senior forward Alyssa Thomas earned Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week honors. She scored a team-high 20 points on 50 percent shooting from the field in Friday's loss to Connecticut and pulled down 14 rebounds for her second doubledouble of the season. ... UMBC freshman forward Sara Tarbert was named the America East Rookie of the Week. Tarbert shot 50percent from the field and 89 percent from the free-throw line to average 20.3 points and 8.0 rebounds in a 1-2 week for the Retrievers. ... Salisbury junior point guard Anna Hackett was selected as the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Hackett led the Sea Gulls in their first two games with 22.5 points, 5.5 assists and 4.5 steals per game.

Terps' Likely earns share of ACC Rookie of the Week

Maryland freshman cornerback Will Likely was named ACC Co-Rookie of the Week. Likely returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown in Saturday's 27-24 overtime win at Virginia Tech. It was Maryland's first punt return for a score since Tony Logan returned one 84 yards for a score against Duke on Oct. 2, 2010. Likely finished the game with 179 all-purpose yards. He shares the honor with North Carolina freshman Ryan Switzer, who returned two punts for touchdowns in the Tar Heels' 34-27 win at Pittsburgh. ... The Terps' game at N.C. State on Nov. 30 is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

More football: Towson sophomore defensive back Donnell Lewis earned CAA Defensive Player of the Week honors. In Saturday's 15-9 win at William & Mary, Lewis made a career-high 10 tackles and intercepted a pass. The Tigers are ranked No. 7 in the Football Championship Subdivision by the Sports Network. ... Navy senior linebacker Cody Peterson was selected as the Football Bowl Subdivision Independent Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week. Peterson recorded eight tackles Saturday in Navy's 42-14 home win over South Alabama. ... Salisbury senior safety Greg Stanton was named Empire 8 Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week after recording two interceptions in the Sea Gulls' 70-14 Regents Cup win over Frostburg State on Friday. Salisbury has been selected to play in the Eastern College Athletic Conference's South Atlantic Bowl against Muhlenberg on Saturday.

Field hockey: Salisbury sophomore forwards Courtney Jantzen and Samantha Johnson were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-South Region first team, while senior back Katie Hastings and junior forward Mallory Elliott were second-team selections. ... Johns Hopkins senior Sarah Henderson was chosen to the NFHCA All-South second team.

Swimming and diving: The Johns Hopkins men's and women's teams are both ranked fourth in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America poll. ... Loyola Maryland freshman Aidan O'Hara was named Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Week, while seniors Michael Brown and Elle Mixa were selected as the men's and women's divers of the week, respectively. Senior Erin Shea received honorable mention. ... Hood's Lauren Fogarty (Broadneck) was named Middle Atlantic Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week after winning three events in a team victory over King's College (Pa.).

Wrestling: Navy sophomore 174-pound Mathew Miller (John Carroll) won his fourth career tournament title at the Roadrunner Open on Sunday at Selland Arena in Fresno, Calif.
