Boat leaks gas into Gunpowder River in Joppatowne

November 19, 2013

Hazmat crews contained fuel leaking from a boat in Joppatowne Monday afternoon.

Crews from the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company were dispatched around 4:15 p.m. to the Gunpowder River in the area of the 200 block of Bridge Drive and the 100 block of Breakwater Court in the Rumsey Island section of Joppatowne. They were responding to a report of the odor of gasoline in the air; the source was determined to be a privately-owned boat.

The Harford County Emergency Operations Hazardous Materials Team was assigned to assist the fire company; they requested assistance from the Maryland Department of the Environment's Emergency Response Team.

Joppa-Magnolia had four fire trucks with 19 volunteer firefighters and one volunteer assistant chief on the scene.
