Orioles expected to hire Braves special assistant Dom Chiti as new bullpen coach

Former Orioles minor league pitcher has worked with Buck Showalter and Dave Wallace

The Orioles are expected to hire Atlanta Braves special assistant Dom Chiti as their bullpen coach, an industry source confirmed Friday night.

An announcement is expected early next week.

Chiti has a history with Orioles manager Buck Showalter and new pitching coach Dave Wallace. He served as bullpen coach during Showalter’s final season managing the Texas Rangers, in 2006, and worked with Wallace developing young pitchers in the Braves minor league system.

Chiti, a former minor league pitcher with the Orioles who also later scouted for the club, has a coaching career that spans more than three decades.

He’s worked as a special assistant for the Braves the past five years, working with pitching development and special-assignment scouting last season.

Before being hired last week to succeed Rick Adair, Wallace spent the past four seasons as the Braves' minor league pitching coordinator.

When the Orioles hired Wallace last week, Showalter said Wallace would play a large role in the hire of the bullpen coach, and that ultimately it would likely be Wallace’s decision because he saw the bullpen coach as an “assistant pitching coach.”

Bill Castro served as the Orioles’ bullpen coach for most of the past two seasons before finishing last season as the club’s pitching coach when Rick Adair went on a personal leave of absence in August. Castro’s contract expired Oct. 31.

The club had pared down the search to three or four finalists, including internal and external candidates. Both Castro and Scott McGregor, who filled in for Castro as bullpen coach, were believed to be under consideration.

Chiti’s expected hire was first reported by MASNSports.com.
