Empty Stocking kicks off fundraising season; goal is $80,000

The Aegis Empty Stocking Fund is continuing its charitable activities to make this Christmas holiday season happier for Harford County residents in need.

The Empty Stocking Fund accepts monetary donations, new unwrapped toys and new books.

The fund-raising goal for 2013 is $80,000; it kicks off the season with $20,225 in monetary donations in its coffers. Recent donations have come from APGFCU Community Involvement Committee, $200; Fortunato's Bros., $200; Pat Lijewski, $300; Dan and Mary Ellen O'Neill, $100; Betty and Ed Miller, $200; Dr. C.J. Klett, $300; Patricia Gilligan, $150: Stanley W. Mathews, $100; Lions Club of Bel Air Inc., $500; Kathleen Stewart, $100; Corbin Fuel Co. Inc. $500; Bill and Eva Kowalesky, $100; Ruth Foard, $200; and Robert Slocum, $100.

Klein's ShopRite Stores included the Empty Stocking Fund in its Partners in Caring Day fund-raiser Sept. 18, when a percentage of store sales were donated to the fund.

Committee members said they want to thank Wendy's Restaurant of Hickory and of Churchville for having fund-raisers to support the Empty Stocking Fund. The Applebee's Flapjack Breakfast fund-raiser was a great success, and bowling at Forest Hill Lanes in June was fun for all who attended, Empty Stocking organizers reported.

Stop by the Empty Stocking Fund display at Barnes and Noble Booksellers at 620 Marketplace Drive in Bel Air and help the fund reach its goal by buying a book for a child.

Several performances are planned at Harford Community College throughout the holiday season. Guests are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy to them to support the Empty Stocking Fund.

Among those performances are:

• "The Nutcracker" presented by Harford Dance Theatre on Friday, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m;   Saturday, Dec. 7 at 1 and 4 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 8 at 1 and 4 p.m. at the Amoss Center. 

• Phoenix Festival Theater's "Babes in Toyland" on Friday, Dec, 13 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 14 at 3 and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 15 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Chesapeake Theater. Tickets to both are available at http://www.tickets.harford.edu.

Eight Harford County Public Library branches – Abingdon, Fallston, Aberdeen, Jarrettsville, Joppa, Edgewood, Whiteford and Darlington, along with the HCPL Administrative offices in Belcamp – will serve as drop-off collection sites for toys for the Empty Stocking Fund this year. The branches participating include.

Monetary donations can be sent to the Aegis Empty Stocking Fund, P.O. Box 189, Bel Air, MD 21014, or brought into the office at 139 N. Main St., Bel Air, MD.
