UMBC grad Cook signs pro contract in Bosnia
Former UMBC guard Ryan Cook (St. Vincent Pallotti) has signed a professional contract with OKK Sloboda Tuzla in the Bosnian Liga I in Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to the school. Cook finished the 2012-13 season with 478 points, the ninth-most in school history, and was selected to the America East Conference second team and to the America East All-Tournament team after averaging 22.0 points per game in two postseason contests. The Laurel native hit 84.7 percent from the free-throw line in two seasons, the second-best in school history. Cook also participated at the First Team All iBall Pro Combine in June; he averaged 16.0 points per game, which ranked second among the 43 players who were invited. OKK Sloboda Tuzla was the runner-up in both the regular season and the championship of Liga I in 2012-13.
Terps' Goree earns ACC Linebacker of the Week
Maryland junior linebacker L.A. Goree earned Atlantic Coast Conference Linebacker of the Week honors, the league announced Monday. Goree had a career-high and team season-high 16 tackles in the Terps' 27-26 win over Virginia on Saturday. Of Goree's 16 stops, nine were solo tackles, and he added one tackle for a loss of 2 yards.
More football: Maryland's Oct. 26 homecoming game against Clemson has been scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on either ABC, ESPN or ESPN2. ... After suffering its first loss of the season Saturday, Towson dropped in the Sports Network's Football Championship Subdivision rankings from No. 3 to No. 7.
Women's soccer: McDaniel freshmen Nicole Hill and Haley Jacobs were named the Centennial Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week. Hill scored the winning goal and assisted in the Green Terror's 2-1 overtime win over Swarthmore and had an assist in a 2-1 win over Franklin & Marshall. Jacobs recorded a total of 15 saves in the two games. ... Mount St. Mary's sophomore goalkeeper Vicky Cocozza earned Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week after posting shutouts in a win Friday over Wagner and a tie Sunday against Robert Morris. ... Navy forward Morgan Dankanich and goalkeeper Elizabeth Hoerner earned Brine Patriot League Offensive Player and Goalkeeper of the Week honors, respectively.
Men's soccer: Salisbury junior forward Tanner East earned Capital Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors, and junior defender Logan Becker was named the conference's Co-Defensive Player of the Week. East scored in wins over Mary Washington and Southern Virginia, while Becker shut out both teams en route to Salisbury's sixth straight shutout.
Field hockey: Salisbury forward Yumi Kim was named CAC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring four goals and recording an assist in wins over York (Pa.) and Frostburg State. Kim recorded her first career hat trick in a 6-0 win over Frostburg.
Swimming and diving: Loyola Maryland senior Caitlin Cronin was selected as the Patriot League Women's Swimmer of the Week, and seniors Michael Brown and Elle Mixa were named the conference's Men's and Women's Divers of the Week after their performances in the Greyhounds' win over American. Cronin won the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events in times of 25.01 seconds and 53.39, respectively. Brown won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 279.00, and Mixa won the 1-meter event with a point total of 234.22.
Men's basketball: UMBC will have a pair of home games featured on ESPN3. The Retrievers will be featured Jan. 20, when they host 2012-13 regular-season America East champions Stony Brook, and Feb. 8, when they travel to Albany, the defending conference tournament champion. The game against the Seawolves will begin at 2 p.m., while the game against Albany will get underway at 7 p.m.
15 Marylanders to compete in national golf tournament
Fifteen Maryland residents will compete in this week's PGA Tour and USGA Special Olympics Golf National Tournament. The tournament, which will be held at the Stockton Seaview Golf Club in Galloway, N.J., from Thursday to Sunday, will feature Andrew Moscoso of Baltimore; April Towler of California, Md.; Jane Ahn and Jason Kauffman of Columbia; Jason Myrick of Chester; Stephanie Baker, Hyun Ahn and John Kuhn of Ellicott City; John E. Stapleton and Robert Baker of Elkridge; Linda Wolfe of Frederick; Larry Jacobs of Gaithersburg; Spencer Jacobs and Ryan Tommer of Rockville; and William Montague of Trappe.
