Terry McGill, the petite dynamo who owns Jordan Thomas Salon & Spa in Bel Air, has set the bar high for her business: “We want to be everything to everyone,” she says with a laugh.
But don’t think for a minute, despite that laugh, that McGill isn’t serious about Jordan Thomas, which she’s owned for 15 years, nurturing it through three locations and always looking for growth opportunities.
This year McGill decided to add med spa services to the list of offerings for her clients. She teamed up with nurse-practictioner Katie Harclerode of Chesapeake Skin Solutions, who takes appointments every Wednesday in the quiet and coddling spa area of McGill’s salon.
From the get-go, Harclerode was booked solid, affirming McGill’s belief that she already “had the audience.” So Chesapeake Skin Solutions began offering weekend appointments at Jordan Thomas, too.
Harclerode says her clients range in age from teenagers to seniors, and they are looking for a wide range of services. Laser hair removal and IPL skin rejuvenation -- which removes age spots and redness among other problems -- are among the most popular.
Other services include chemical peels that aim to refresh the face’s skin texture and color, and microdermabrasion, which basically vacuums the face and stimulates collagen, encouraging a soft youthful texture. For those concerned with the effects of aging on skin, Botox and injectables work to diminish lines and wrinkles. Harclerode also does spider vein treatments and provides an anti-aging medical skin care line.
Many of the services require a series of treatments before clients will see the effects. Harclerode won’t quote prices until she consults with each individual as each client’s needs are unique. But she does say that her unit rate for Botox starts at $100 to $120 for small areas.
Katie Kinslow, Mrs. Bel Air Maryland America 2013 (who competes for the state title this month), is sponsored by the salon and goes to Harclerode for laser hair removal. Kinslow calls the salon “one-stop shopping for beauty” and says she prefers getting med spa services here because “you get the glamour and comfort of a spa” with your med spa treatments. And, she adds, there’s an element of privacy and no one knows why you’re there: “People see you walking out of a spa and not a clinic.”
