Two men were killed in Baltimore on Monday, marking September as the second-deadliest month this year for homicides.

A man was stabbed multiple times at about 5:45 p.m. Monday in the 3600 block of Benson Avenue, in the Violetville neighborhood. He later died at a hospital. Police said a person of interest was taken into custody on the scene.

Another man was shot and killed in Northeast Baltimore on Monday evening, in the same neighborhood where another man was killed less than a week ago.

The man was shot in the 3000 block of Tivoly Avenue in the Coldstream Homestead Montebello neighborhood at around 6:30 p.m., police said. He was pronounced dead on the scene by medics.

Last Tuesday, Kevin David Everette, 27, was fatally shot just blocks away from the scene of Monday's gunfire. More information on the killings was not available.

In September, Baltimore police classified 24 deaths as homicides, though a small number of those were old cases in which the victim later died in September or police determined the case was a homicide in that month. Only in June did police have more homicides, investigating 27 of them.

As of Sept. 30, 177 people had been murdered in Baltimore in 2013, according to police.
