Smaltimore takes off quickly in Canton

BAR REVIEW

Stock-exchange pricing system, strong service draw crowds

September 25, 2013|By Wesley Case, The Baltimore Sun

Too loud, too busy, too many beer options — these are problems new bars would love to face, and Zink certainly isn't complaining. Smaltimore may have been envisioned as a low-key neighborhood bar, but Canton's thirst for the new has turned it into something more busy and thrilling. If it can somehow strike a balance between the two extremes, Smaltimore will make a strong case as Canton's best new bar.

But even if it can't, there's little reason to bet against it. Smaltimore simply does too much right to fail.

Smaltimore

Back story: Formerly Lager's Pub, Smaltimore quietly opened in Canton in mid-July, and held its official grand opening on Aug. 15. Since then, it has seen steady crowds coming in for local beer, cheeseburgers and strong service. Managing consultant Jason Zink said sushi will be offered in the near future, which he hopes will attract more diners.

Parking: Free on the street

Signature drink: This is a place for beer and wine drinkers. On a recent visit, a pint of Saranac Pumpkin Ale was less than $5, thanks to the Drink Exchange format.

Where: 2522 Fait Ave., Canton

Contact: twitter.com/smaltimore1

Open: 5 p.m.-2 a.m. Monday-Friday; 10-2 a.m. Saturday and Sunday
