Ogden to be honored as 'Hometown Hall of Famer'

Former Ravens offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden will be recognized by the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Allstate Insurance Company in Washington next Friday , as part of "Hometown Hall of Famers," a national program honoring the hometown roots of the sport's greatest coaches, players and contributors with special ceremonies and plaque dedication events in local communities. An 11-time Pro Bowl pick and former high school standout at St. Albans School in Washington, Ogden will be presented with a plaque during a special ceremony at 8:45 a.m. in the school's gymnasium, where the plaque will be on display permanently. The presentation will be made by Ogden's former athletic director from St.Albans, Oliver "Skip" Grant. In addition to the plaque, a commemorative Jonathan Ogden "Hometown Hall of Famers" road sign will be on display in Washington.

Former UMBC star Westervelt acquired in trade by Mammoth

The Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League announced today that it has acquired forward Drew Westervelt (UMBC, John Carroll) from the Philadelphia Wings. Westervelt, 28, is a dominant right-handed goal-scorer who has scored 30-plus goals in four of the past five seasons. Colorado gave up two second-round selections in 2013, a first-round pick in 2015 and transition player Ryan Hotaling in the trade while securing a fourth-pick in Monday's entry draft. "Drew's a big, dominant and strong offensive force in the NLL," said Mammoth president and general manager Steve Govett. "He has adapted extremely well to the indoor game, and will have a major impact on our offense." The Bel Air native has 164 goals and 138 assists in his six-year NLL career, all with Philadelphia. He plays in Major League Lacrosse for the Chesapeake Bayhawks.

Former Shoreman Gilbert hired as coach at Berry

Curtis Gilbert (Washington College) has been hired as the second-ever men's lacrosse coach at Division III Berry College in Rome, Ga. Gilbert arrives from New England College in Henniker, N.H., where he had a 69-48 record in seven seasons as coach. Gilbert also had stints as an assistant lacrosse coach at Denison, Washington College and Whittier. Gilbert was a four-year member of the Shoremen's men's lacrosse team and played on the 1998 NCAA Division III championship team.

Fan photo op: Fans can get their picture taken with back-to-back Major League Lacrosse champion Steven Brooks of the Chesapeake Bayhawks and the MLL Steinfeld Trophy on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Total Lacrosse's grand opening in Sterling, Va. In addition to Brooks, Sam Bradman (Salisbury) of LXM Pro and Drew Adams of the New York Lizards and will also be on hand giving out prizes and signing autographs at the store, 21031 Triple Seven Rd., Suite 100. Adams will be there from 10 a.m. to noon, and Bradman from 2p.m. to 4 p.m. Brooks finished the summer with 13 goals and eight assists for the Bayhawks, while Adams posted a 12.34 GAA and .549 save percentage for the Lizards.

Men's college recruiting: Entering its fourth season in Division I, Mercer announced that midfielder Walker Ensor (Boys' Latin), defensemen Austin Simpson (Westminster) and Chad Slifer (South Carroll), as well as Mount St. Mary's transfer Justin Wood, have joined the team for the 2014 season. Ensor, who specialized in defensive midfield, played a significant role for the Lakers and was a member of Team Maryland in the 2012 Brine All-America Classic. In 2013, Simpson helped lead the Owls to a a 19-0 season and the Class 4A-3A state championship. Slifer was an All-County selection all four years in high school and member of Team Maryland in the 2012 Brine All-America Classic. Wood, a defenseman, was a 2011 US Lacrosse All-American. ... ... Division II Lenoir-Rhyne said attackman Cole Abourjilie, a Salisbury transfer, and midfielder Matthew Fisher (Westminster) have joined the roster for next spring.
