VCU rallies past No. 13 Terps in men's soccer
Virginia Commonwealth scored three goals in the final 13 minutes to defeat the No. 13 Maryland men's soccer team, 3-2, on Sunday night at Ludwig Field. The Terps (1-2-1) got goals from Jake Pace in the 33rd minute and and Chris Odoi-Atsem with 19:19 remaining in the game. But VCU, which tied No. 9 New Mexico on Friday night — scored two goals in the 78th minute and one in the 87th.
Women's college soccer: Natalia Pinkney scored her first college goal and Sofia Read added her second of the year to rally Towson (3-2-1) to a 2-1 victory over Duquesne (1-3) in the Navy Invitational. The Tigers fell behind in the second minute; Read scored in the 81st and Pinkney in the 84th. ... In the same event, Navy (3-2) earned its second straight overtime win, 3-2, against St. Bonaventure (1-3-1). Kaylie Davidson scored the winning goal in the 92nd minute. ... Mount St. Mary's (1-5) was routed, 4-0, by host Pennsylvania (2-0).
College field hockey: Jill Witmer and Sarah Sprink scored two goals each to help No. 2 Maryland cruise past No. 17 Drexel, 8-3, in the Terps' home opener. Six players scored for the Terps (4-0). The Dragons fell to 2-2. Witmer and former Terp Katie O'Donnell were named to the U.S. Senior National Team's roster for the Pan American Games on Sept. 21-28 in Mendoza, Argentina. The Pan Am Cup winner will receive automatic qualification to the 2014 World Cup. ... Marissa Glatt scored a little more than seven minutes into the game and Lehigh (1-3) hung on to earn a 1-0 victory over host Towson (1-3).
Auto racing: Justin Boston of Baltimore finished 16th in the Prairie Meadows 150, an ARCA Racing Series event Saturday night at Iowa Speedway in Newton. Boston is third in the unofficial point standings with 4,065, trailing Frank Kimmel (4,565) and Mason Mingus (4,280).
WNBA: First-round draft pick Elena Delle Donne scored 22 points to lead the visiting Chicago Sky (22-9) to a 93-79 victory over the Mystics, denying Washington (14-17) an opportunity to clinch a playoff spot. Ivory Latta scored 18points for Washington, and Crystal Langhorne (Maryland) added 16.
Major League Soccer: Chivas USA (6-15-7) got a goal from Erick Torres in the 51st minute and held on for a 1-0 victory over visiting D.C. United (3-19-5).
More soccer: The Baltimore Bays Chelsea began play in the United States Developmental Soccer Academy on Saturday with a win and two ties against D.C. United. The Bays' under-16 team won, 2-1, behind strong goalkeeping by Chase Vosvick (Gilman) and goals by Dylan Johnson and Kelvin Tata (C. Milton Wright). Assists were recorded by Lorenzo Janeka and Justin Spencer (Perry Hall). The Bays' under-18 and under-14 teams recorded 1-1 ties in their games against D.C. United. The under-18 goal was scored by Kevin Guzman, assisted by Sixtus Akinlosotu. The under-14 goal was scored by Tamer Boumstar, assisted by Cannon Buechley (Calvert Hall).
