Police say Edgewater man foiled burglary, detained suspect

September 01, 2013

Anne Arundel County police say an Edgewater man stopped a burglary in progress at his home Saturday and held the suspect until police arrived.

Police said at about 2 p.m., officers responded to 1400 block of Shesley Place, Edgewater, and found a man, later identified as Matthew Thomas Chrismer, 29, of no fixed address, being held down. Police said the homeowner, with assistance from a neighbor, detained Chrismer until officers arrived.

The homeowner said he had been in his living room when he looked out of a window and saw a man on his driveway. The victim walked outside and saw the man in his garage holding an item inside his waist – which he thought to be a weapon, police said.

The homeowner stopped the intruder and threw him on the ground, and his wife called 911, police said.

The suspect was found to be in possession of alcohol and other items from a refrigerator in the garage, police said. He was charged with first- and third-degree burglary.
