Jason Hammel feels no discomfort and will pitch from mound Friday

Jason Hammel (strained right forearm) continued his progress toward returning to the mound in a big league game next month.

Hammel, whose disabled list stint dates back to July 29, threw long toss Wednesday and said he felt no discomfort at all. He said he made about 25 throws from 90 feet, 25 more from 120 feet and 10 others from about 50 feet.

Now he’ll continue with the plan to pitch Friday off a mound for the first time in three weeks. He expects to throw about 30 pitches – he called it a “strength-building session.”

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Hammel likely would have to make two rehab starts in the minors before returning, so Hammel isn’t expected to join the team until after rosters expand Sept. 1.

Hammel, the club’s Opening Day starter who was 7-8 with a 5.20 ERA, said he will do whatever the team says, but can’t wait to get back in a big league game.
