Two-time defending Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champion Gilman is ranked No. 3 in the preseason Maryland High School Football State Media Poll behind No. 1 Good Counsel and No. 2 DeMatha.

The Greyhounds, who finished second behind Good Counsel in last season's final poll, will have an early shot at the top ranking when they take on the Falcons, the four-time Washington Catholic Athletic Conference champion Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Towson University's Johnny Unitas Stadium.

Last season's 20-19 win for Good Counsel over Gilman in overtime ultimately decided the top spot. Gilman does not play DeMatha this season.

In the poll released Tuesday, Calvert Hall was ranked No. 4, with River Hill at No. 9; Old Mill at No. 10; Dunbar at No. 11; Meade at No. 13; McDonogh at No. 15; Arundel at No. 16; Franklin at No. 20; Westminster at No. 22; and Mount St. Joseph at No. 24. McDonogh and Mount St. Joseph were not ranked in last season's final poll.

Defending Class 4A champion Henry A. Wise was the highest-ranked public school team, with all four of last year's state champs in the Top 25: No. 8 Middletown (2A), River Hill (3A) and Dunbar (1A).

Five Baltimore-area teams also received votes: St. Frances, Atholton, St. Paul's, Archbishop Spalding and Hereford.
