Berlin Little League All Stars win East Region opener
The Berlin Little League All Stars, who have won three straight Maryland Little League Championships, took the opening game of the East Region of the Little League World Series on Friday, 5-4, against East Greenwich, N.J. Tristan "T-Rex" McDonough led the way at the plate and on the mound, driving in two runs on two hits and allowing just one hit and one earned run in two innings of relief. Berlin never trailed, as East Greenwich could not come back from a three-run third-inning deficit. Hayden Snelsire recorded the win. He allowed three runs over four innings. Should Berlin win the East Region, the team would advance to Williamsport, Pa., for the Little League World Series on Aug. 15-25.
D.C. tops Montreal for first MLS victory since June 22
For the first time since June 22, D.C. United has won a Major League Soccer match. In front of an announced 12,354 on Saturday night, D.C. topped the Montreal Impact, 3-1, to move its record to 3-15-4 this season. It was the first time since April 21 that United scored more than one goal in a league match. Luis Silva started the scoring in the 19th minute for D.C. after he put home the rebound of a shot taken by Nick DeLeon. After Montreal scored in the 52nd minute, Conor Doyle recorded the game-winner in the 68th. Jared Jeffrey scored in the third minute of added time in the second half.
