A man riding a scooter along Coastal Highway on Wednesday collided with a delivery box truck and suffered life-threatening injuries, according to Ocean City Police.

Police said the man on the scooter, an unidentified 26-year-old from California, is believed to have been driving the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

The scooter was traveling in the southbound bus lane near 84th Street around 2:30 p.m. when it attempted to pass some bicyclists, lost control and ran into the side of a large delivery box truck. Police said the scooter driver was wearing a helmet at the time but still sustained severe injuries.

He was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center before being transferred to Maryland Shock Trauma, where police said the driver was listed in critical condition.
