Paint-in 50 years ago also helped Main Street's recovery [Letter]

July 24, 2013

Thank you all who voted for Ellicott City! Main Street Ellicott City was painted top to bottom by members of the Cross Country Garden Club in 1962 in response to a similar contest. Jean Hannon, a prominent E.C. activist, persuaded her garden club to enter the contest. Two prominent artists, Virginia Leach and Crawford Ian MacCallum, designed individual store front color schemes. Garden club ladies climbed ladders, paint brushes in hand, and painted every store front in two days. That paint-in really mattered as it spearheaded the recovery of a deteriorating E.C. Main Street. That was more that 50 years ago! Let's hope that this paint-in enhances and revitalizes Ellicott City Main Street as well.
