Truck driver dies in crash with MTA bus in Woodlawn

Baltimore County police are investigating the crash

One man died and another was seriously injured after a head-on collision between a pickup truck and a Maryland Transit Administration bus in Woodlawn on Wednesday afternoon, Baltimore County police said.

Kirby Alexander Cooper Sr., 71, of the 2000 Block of Royal Court Drive in Woodlawn, died at the scene, police said. Cooper was driving a Ford F150 south on northbound Woodlawn Drive about 5:15 p.m. when he struck head-on an MTA bus turning onto Woodlawn Drive, police said.

The bus driver was taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Police identified him on Thursday as Alan Jerome Shanks, 52, of the 1700 block of Waverly Way in Baltimore.

Seven bus passengers were taken to area hospitals non-life threatening injuries.

Inez Jones, 55, and Hassan Ghee, 20, were taken to Shock Trauma. Rosalind Scott, 54; Marsha Reaves, 62; Vanessa Pugh, 60; Anastasia Lowery, 22; and Angela Carmichael, 58, were taken to Sinai Hospital.

The crash closed Woodlawn Drive between Security Boulevard and Parallel Drive and was reopened at about 9 p.m. Wednesday night.

The county's crash team is investigating the incident.
