Bicyclist killed in crash in Severna Park

July 17, 2013|By Carrie Wells, The Baltimore Sun

A 57-year-old bicyclist was killed in Severna Park on Wednesday afternoon after he was struck by a dump truck, Anne Arundel County authorities said.

Police identified the bicyclist as Thomas Patrick Heslin Jr., of Severna Park. Police said Heslin was traveling west on Berrywood Drive at 3 p.m. when he did not stop at a stop sign at the intersection with Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard. Heslin then did not yield the right of way to a dump truck traveling north on Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard, police said.

Police said the driver of the dump truck, owned by Cole Ventures of Annapolis, attempted to avoid hitting Heslin but was unable to.

Witnesses attempted to render aid to Heslin. Police are investigating but say speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision.
