Brian Roberts to return to the Orioles lineup Sunday

Second baseman Brian Roberts (hamstring) will join the Orioles on Saturday and be activated from the 60-day disabled list and added to the team’s 40-man/25-man roster Sunday for the series finale against the New York Yankees, manager Buck Showalter said following the Orioles' 4-3 win.

The Orioles will have to make a move to add Roberts to the 25-man roster but they will not have to make a move to add him to the 40-man roster.

Roberts exited Friday night’s game at Triple-A Norfolk after the fifth inning because of rain and field conditions after going 0-for-3. He went 3-for-13 in four rehab games with the Tides with two walks, a double and an RBI.

Showalter initially thought Roberts would have to take batting practice before leaving Norfolk, but now the 35-year-old will come straight to Baltimore to be with the team.

“He’s been playing at a high intensity,” Showalter said before Friday’s game. “[Tides manager Ron Johnson has] been real effusive in his praise, the way he’s going about things.”

Roberts was 5-for-12 through the Orioles’ first three games of the season, but he was injured stealing second base at Tampa Bay on April 4.
