Freddy Garcia accepts minor league assignment and will stay with Orioles

Right-hander will return to Triple-A Norfolk

Right-hander Freddy Garcia has agreed to return to Triple-A Norfolk and pitch for the Tides after being optioned to the minors on Monday.

Because of the veteran’s service time, Garcia had 72 hours to explore his options and could have refused the assignment and become a free agent. Garcia opted out of his contract and then signed a new minor league deal with the organization by Thursday’s 3 p.m. deadline.

Garcia, 36, was 3-5 with a 5.77 ERA in 11 games with the Orioles. He was 4-0 with a 2.67 ERA in five games with the Tides earlier this year after signing a minor-league with the Orioles on March 27.

When the Orioles sent him out Monday, manager Buck Showalter told him they would like him to stay with the organization in case he’d be needed later this season.
