IRS failure starts with tax code

June 07, 2013

I must admit I don't feel terribly sorry for the tea party folks and their difficulties with the Internal Revenue Service ("New charges against the IRS," June 5). The problem isn't with the IRS, which may have been guilty of sloppy workmanship, but with the tax code that allows political action groups to call themselves "social welfare agencies" and hide their donor lists from public scrutiny.

Political advocacy groups must be required to divulge their financial transactions and lists of donors to public review.
