A man was found shot in a field parents and kids use to get to Coldstream Elementary School

Parents walking their children to class Thursday morning in the Coldstream Homestead Montebello neighborhood were met by a grim sight: Crime scene tape roping off a field many cut through to get to Coldstream Elementary School.

Baltimore police said a man was found shot to death in the field, adjacent to the Waverly Post Office at the corner of Montpelier Street and Homewood Avenue. On the other side of the field sits the elementary school playground.

As suit-wearing Baltimore homicide detectives jotted down notes and uniformed police officers used green metal detectors and shovels to search for shells, parents and children walked past the scene on their way to school.

"That's the way we walk every morning," said Lisa Bacote, who had just taken her four children between the ages of 4 and 9 to school. "I wonder if a child walked past and saw a person lying there? Those things can traumatize children."

"We're definitely not going to walk through here anymore," she said.

Baltimore police spokeswoman Det. Angela Carter-Watson said police found the body after someone reported an injured person in the 3000 block of Homewood Ave. at 7:05 a.m. Officers responding found the man dead from a single gunshot wound.

Detectives had no suspects.

Police also reported that a man was shot in the arm and shoulder at about 1:20 a.m. in the 2200 block of Druid Hill Ave. in Druid Heights. Detectives are investigating and no other information was immediately available.
