Brooklyn Brewery rolls into Baltimore

The Brooklyn, N.Y.-based brewery is collaborating with Baltimore chefs for one-of-a-kind beer dinners

Brooklyn Brewery is on the road.

The New York-based brewery is in the middle of an 11-city tour that began in Austin, Texas, before moving on to New Orleans, Nashville, Tenn., and Boston. The traveling event is a benefit for Slow Food USA.

It's Baltimore's turn. The Brooklyn Brewery Mash: Adventures in Food, Film, Music, Books and Beer is in Baltimore through Sunday for a week of parties, comedy, concerts, pop-up supper clubs and readings.

Among the six days of activities are a few food highlights. On Wednesday, Hersh's Pizza & Drinks in Riverside will host Local 2 Ways, a multi-course beer dinner celebrating local cuisine, interpreted two ways by Josh Hershkovitz of Hersh's and Brooklyn Brewery house chef Andrew Gerson. And on Sunday, Gerson and Birroteca chef Cyrus Keefer will collaborate on a Slow Supper at Cylburn Mansion. The event will include projection installations from Brooklyn's Nuit Blanche New York, a producer of light, sound, and projection art, and all proceeds from the dinner will benefit Slow Food Baltimore. The Slow Supper is 7 p.m. at Cylburn Mansion, 4915 Greenspring Ave. Tickets are $80. For ticket information go to

"Collaboration is the essence of what we do," said Gerson. "We look for restaurants that operate with the same ethos as Brooklyn Brewery."

Gerson and Hershkovitz have been planning the May 1 dinner over the phone. "It's an organic process. We look at what's available, what's in season. Once we've created the menu, I start working on pairing beers through contrasts and similarities. We'll be showcasing some things not readily available in the market," Gerson said.

Gerson said the Brooklyn Brewery Mash is more than just importing Brooklyn culture to other cities. The tour's organizers looked for cities that remind them of home.

"It's about celebrating what's in your city as well,' Gerson said. "Baltimore is such a dynamic city. There's so much room for growth and change. It's an exciting time for your city."

The base of operations for Brooklyn Brewery Mash, Mash HQ, is at Max's Taphouse (737 S Broadway, 410-675-6297,, which will feature Brooklyn Brewery beer specials through Friday, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Under one roof The Pikesville Chamber of Commerce will host its second annual Taste of Pikesville event Thursday . The event is a kickoff for Re-Discover Pikesville Restaurant Week, which will run Friday through May 11.

Participating restaurants and retailers at Taste of Pikesville include Mari Luna Latin Grille, Ruth's Chris Steak House, Gourmet Again and Suburban House. Guests at the event can compare notes with Kathy Wielech Patterson and Neal Patterson, authors of the recently published "Food Lovers' Guide to Baltimore."

Walking the point Twenty restaurants and bars in Fells Point and Harbor East are joining together for the Summer Stroll, a Wednesday evening happy hour with $3 beer options, $4 wine offerings, $5 cocktail selections and food specials.

Participating bars and restaurants include Bond Street Social, Chazz, Dog Watch Tavern, The Horse You Came in On Saloon, James Joyce, Kali's Mezze, Kali's Court, Kooper's Tavern, La Scala, Max's Taphouse, One-Eyed Mike's, Red Star, Slainte, Talara, Tapas Adela, Ten Ten, Townhouse Kitchen, Waterfront Kitchen, Willow and Woody's.
