Laura Doolan, an English teacher at Westminster High School, was named Carroll County 2013 Teacher of the Year during the Board of Education's employee recognition ceremony on Thursday.

"Ms. Doolan is a champion of students, working tirelessly beyond expectations to nurture students' academic growth and social well-being," said Janetta Jayman, supervisor of English and World Languages for Carroll County Public Schools. "Her belief in creating successful learning experiences for all students has been the foundation for her own successful teaching career."

In addition to teaching Doolan's activities at Westminster High School have included serving as the yearbook sponsor, class sponsor, School Improvement Team member, chair of the school's Multicultural Committee and graduation coordinator.

She's also founder and a sponsor of Westminster High School's Stand Up! organization, a group that works to recognize and celebrate diversity and inclusion at the school.

At the county level, she has a leadership role in writing curriculum and has led countywide professional development on the system's new curriculum. Her professional associations include the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and the National Council for Teachers of English. She is also a National Board Certified Teacher.

She graduated magna cum laude with a degree in English from James Madison University in 1992, and received a masters in Secondary English Curriculum and Instruction in 2003 from the University of Virginia. She has completed additional studies at Goucher College and is currently completing her administrative certification at McDaniel College.

Doolan began her teaching career as a home and substitute teacher for Carroll County Public Schools in 1992. From August 1992 until 2004, she taught in the Charlottesville City School System, where she was recognized as the Walmart Central Virginia Teacher of the Year.

In 2004, she returned to Carroll and came to Westminster High School, where she has taught courses in grades nine through 12 at all academic levels. In 2010, she became chair of the English Department.

A release from CCPS noted that Doolan comes from a family of educators, and considers the teaching profession her calling.

The Carroll County Teacher of the Year Award, presented in collaboration with the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, is awarded annually to an individual who represents Carroll County teachers in the Maryland Teacher of the Year Program, and possibly the National Teacher of the Year Program.
