Former Chesapeake-AA star Gibson wins softball honors at Tennessee

Tennessee senior Lauren Gibson (Chesapeake-Anne Arundel) was selected as the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I National Player of the Week and Southeastern Conference Player of the Week after hitting .818 with five homers, three doubles and 18 RBIs over four games. In addition, Gibson is a Top 25 Finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award.

More college softball: North Carolina State sophomore Emily Weiman (Archbishop Spalding) was named Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week.

College baseball: Anthony Papio continued his clutch play with a two-out two-RBI single in the seventh to give host Maryland (22-20) a lead it would not relinquish in 5-3 victory over Liberty. ... Junior outfielder Rob McCabe gave host UMBC (11-20) its second straight nonconference walk-off win by dumping a single to left-center and driving in freshman Jesse Smith with the winning run as the Retrievers defeated Coppin State (12-26) in 12 innings, 2-1. ... Saint Augustine left fielder Jason Baytop (Manchester Valley) of the was selected as the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Rookie of the Year. Joining him on the All-Rookie team was third baseman Carey Cheek (St.Frances). ... Salisbury senior designated hitter Evan Graci was named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week.

College track and field: UMBC freshman Vincent Rentzsch was chosen as the America East Most Outstanding Male Field Athlete. ... Salisbury freshman Luke Campbell was named CAC Track Co-Athlete of the Week, and senior Chelsea Tavik (Seton Keough) was the Field Athlete of the Week for the fourth consecutive week. ... McDaniel senior Carlos Hernandez was named Centennial Conference Field Athlete of the Week.

Men's college tennis: UMBC senior Gaulthier Berret was named America East Player of the Week.

Women's college tennis: Salisbury freshman Natalie Savage earned the CAC Player of the Week award for the second straight week.

Varsity boys basketball: North Carroll announced the hiring of Rob Vaughn as coach. Vaughn, a former North Carroll player, takes over the program from his brother Chris and returns to the position he held from 2003 to 2006. After leaving the Panthers, Rob Vaughn served a stint at McDaniel as an assistant under former North Carroll and McDaniel head coach Bob Flynn. Vaughn teaches physical education at one of North Carroll's feeder schools, Shiloh Middle.
