Man dies in Montgomery Co. after being struck with police Taser

A man who police said was acting erratically died Friday night in Gaithersburg after he refused officers' orders and was struck with a Taser.

Police were called to the 8800 block of Cross County Pl. at about 6:10 p.m. for a report of a 51-year-old man "acting strangely" — standing in a parked pickup truck, yelling, and crawling on other vehicles. Officers who arrived on the scene said he jumped onto an SUV and continued to act strangely, and the officer hit him with pepper spray, police said.

Undeterred, police said the man picked up a potted plant and a landscaping rock, then picked up a child's scooter and struck the front door of a residence. The man continued to refuse the commands of officers, who struck him with their Tasers, police said.

After he was handcuffed, police said they noticed the man was not breathing. Fire personnel gave him CPR and he was transported to Shady Grove Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Montgomery County police said in a statement that the officers have been placed on administrative leave, per protocol. The man was not identified pending notification of his relatives.
