In just third year of conference, Frostburg State in position to qualify for CAC tournament

Bobcats collected first league win last Saturday and will battle Mary Washington this Wednesday for fourth place in conference

Frostburg State’s first victory in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) was a meaningful step for the program. But the team – which is playing in its third season in the league – is in position to qualify for its first conference tournament.

At 9-5 overall and 1-3 in the CAC, the Bobcats are currently jockeying with Mary Washington for the No. 4 seed in the six-team tournament. And they can further pad their cushion when the Eagles (7-5 overall and 1-3 in league) visit Frostburg on Wednesday evening.

At stake is the No. 4 seed and a first-round game at home, and those rewards are what Bobcats coach Tommy Pearce is seeking.

“We think the winner of this game might be playing for home-field advantage in the first round, which – with it being a midweek game and you’re talking about significant travel – I think that home-field advantage in that first round would be something that we’re playing for,” he said Tuesday morning. “So we definitely feel like we have a lot to play for.”

Frostburg State does not have a chance to catch St. Mary’s (9-5, 4-1) or York (12-3, 4-1) for the No. 2 or No. 3 seeds, but Pearce said that has not diminished the team’s belief that it can compete with its more experienced rivals.

“We wanted to put ourselves in the same discussion as those teams that are making the conference tournament every year – the Yorks, the Mary Washingtons, the St. Mary’s,” he said. “We kind of think we’re right where we want to be as far as our goals. And now that we know that we’re there, the next step is to start talking about our seed in the conference tournament and winning a first-round game and going from there.”
