Factory Grill at Savage Mill features pulled pork, cupcakes and more

Historic Savage Mill, a restored two-centuries-old cotton mill, draws another notch in its evolutionary timeline as it welcomes its newest eatery, The Factory Grill and Bakery Too.

Owners Karen and Ken Chamberlain had been working in the retail business for 15 years when they decided to open a restaurant. Despite having no professional culinary background, the couple had faith that, with a great entrepreneurial spirit and a little raw talent, they could achieve their dream. “We like food, and I like to cook,” says Karen. “The business started with cupcakes and grew from there.”

Open seven days a week, the Factory Grill serves family-style fare, including burgers, pork barbecue, sandwiches, sweet potato fries, coleslaw and salads. In addition, the restaurant offers an all-day breakfast menu and a dessert menu featuring ice cream, cupcakes and brownies. Birthday cakes and wedding cakes also are available. According to Karen, customers especially clamber after the Angus beef, pulled pork, Cap’n Crunch chicken fingers and homemade potato chips.

The Chamberlains’ operation at Savage Mill is their second location. They continue to operate their original location in the Marley Station Mall in Glen Burnie. Pleasant neighbors and customers have made the Chamberlains feel welcome in the new space, Karen adds. “The people over here are phenomenal,” she says.

With affable counter service, a menu designed especially for children and a TV that provides living-room appeal, the restaurant aims to make people feel comfortable and at home. “We want to achieve a family-friendly atmosphere where you can relax and bring your kids,” says Karen.
