Fly-fishing lessons

Boater safety

April through August: The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels is offering two-evening boater safety courses from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. this Wednesday and Thursday, May 15-16, June 12-13, July 17-18 and Aug. 15-16. Decoy exhibit

Through Nov. 3: "Crisfield Carvings—Bird Hunting on Broad Waters" will be on display daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Waterfowling Building at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum at Navy Point in St. Michaels. Yellowstone River

Wednesday, April 17: Maryland Trout Unlimited will sponsor a talk by Dusty Wissmath of the Dusty Wissmath Fly Fishing School and Guide Service in Mercersburg, Pa., about the Yellowstone River complex and fishing opportunities closer to home. From 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Towson Presbyterian Church. Public welcome.

Charity 3-D shoot

Saturday, April 20: Vingt Neuf Bowmen will hold a 20-target 3-D shoot from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Maryland State Game & Fish at 8735 Honeygo Blvd. Perry Hall. Cost: $10 for adults and $3 for students under 18. Refreshments available. Rain date: next Sunday, April 21. All proceeds will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Schindler Triathlon

Saturday, April 20: The 7th Annual Emily Schindler Memorial Triathlon, comprising an 800-yard swim, 9 1/2-mile bike ride and 3-mile run, will be held at the Community Center in Severna Park. The cost is $50 for an individual, $90 for a two-person relay team and $135 for a three-person team. Participants also may sign up for the Flamingo Feat distance of a 1,600-yard swim, 18-mile bike ride and 6-mile run. Registration: or

Tough Mudder

Saturday, April 20, and next Sunday, April 21: The Tough Mudder Mid-Atlantic Spring event will be held at the Peacemaker National Training Center in Gerrardstown, W.Va.. The hardcore obstacle course designed by British Special Forces tests participants' strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie, and features obstacles such as Electroshock Therapy (a gantlet of 10,000-volt live wires), Funky Monkey (greased-up monkey bars) and Fire Walker (4-foot-high flames). Badminton tourney

Saturday, April 20, and next Sunday, April 21: The ninth annual Baltimore Badminton Charity Open raises money for the American Red Cross. There are events for middle and high school players as well as adults and seniors. Play will be at the Northeast Regional Recreation Center (the former Perring Racquet Club) in Parkville and is open to the public. The men's event is closed but there are spots for women's, youth and senior events. Information:

Race in Salisbury

Next Sunday, April 21: The Miles For Mom Shark Run, hosted by the Salisbury University rugby team, will include runs of 2 miles and 5 miles, a competition run/race and a recreational/fun walk. The club rugby team uses the event to help pay for its pursuit of a national club championship and to make a donation to the Claudia Mayer Breast Cancer Foundation. Information:

Race for Excellence

April 27: Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association Central Maryland 6th Annual Race For Excellence, 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run. Benefits AFCEA's Central Maryland Scholarship Fund, which provides merit-based college scholarships to local high school students. Thompson Run/Walk

April 28: The 2nd Annual Adam Thompson 5K Run/5K Walk, 8 a.m., Harford Community College, 401 Thomas Run Road in Bel Air. The race honors the memory of a first-year Harford CC student who was killed in an automobile accident in 2011. NOOD Regatta

May 3-5: The largest sailboat racing tour in the country, the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regatta series, will stop at the Annapolis Yacht Club. More than 1,000 sailors will compete in the Chesapeake Bay from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, May 3; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 4; and 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5. Mud run

May 5: Terrapin Adventures has partnered with Playworks Baltimore to host a 5K run through the woods of Savage to benefit the nonprofit Playworks Baltimore and its effort to bring safe, meaningful play to Baltimore schools. Registration is $30 before March 15 and $40 after that date. To participate, runners must also raise a minimum of $25 for Playworks Baltimore. For information and to pre-register, go to

Md. Half Marathon

May 11: Registration is open for the fifth annual Maryland Half Marathon to benefit the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center. The race will be in the Maple Lawn community of Howard County. The cost of registration will be $75 until Jan. 31, $85 in February and $90 from March 1 to May 11.
