Howard County police have arrested a man they say set fire to an apartment in Columbia Friday and hurled obscenities at police officers before fleeing.

Alejandro Adolfo Rodriguez, 25, of the 5300 block of Harpers Farm Road in Columbia, is charged with first- and second-degree assault, first- and second-degree arson, and malicious burning. Police spotted him walking in the 5400 block of Eliots Oak Road in Columbia and arrested him without incident at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday, they said.

On Friday, officers responded to the apartment building where Rodriguez lives around 9:30 p.m. for a report of a disturbance, police said, and found a 25-year-old woman suffering from injuries. As the officers approached the building, Rodriguez appeared in a second-story window and began shouting at them, according to police.

The officers then noticed a fire and forced their way inside, but Rodriguez fled out a rear window, police said.

The police called the fire department and evacuated some surrounding buildings. No one was injured, but 17 people were temporarily displaced from their apartments, police said.
