April arrived today, and with it comes a busy month for activities in the Town of Bel Air, including Kite Day, the opening of the Saturday farmers market and some popular annual fundraising events.

In addition, this April a couple of highly visible public art projects will be installed in town.

Work is expected to begin this week on a wall mural to be painted on the Sheriff's Office Headquarters building overlooking the town's new Main Street parking lot.

The sheriff's building mural will be painted by Marshall Adams, who was delayed in getting started last week by the weather, town officials said. The theme of the mural is historic Bel Air, and the painting will depict the courthouse square on Main Street in the 1950s, when the sheriff's house stood on the site of the current headquarters building. The old jail was behind the sheriff's building and is still standing.

Last fall, the Bel Air Board of Town Commissioners approved $9,000 for the mural, Planning Director Kevin Small said Wednesday.

Later in the month, a much anticipated Bobcat mascot sculpture will be installed and dedicated outside the Bel Air High football field.
