Indoor archery

Fishing, boating mart

Today, March 17: Fishing and Boating Flea Market. 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Commodore Hall, 1909 Old Eastern Ave., Essex. New and used rods, reels and fishing tackle will be for sale along with boats, trailers and boating equipment. Ice skating

Fishing seminar

Monday, March 18: Local angler Skip Zinck will discuss preseason catch-and-release trolling tactics for large rockfish in the Chesapeake Bay at a seminar hosted by the Broadneck/Magothy River chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association from 7:30p.m. to 9 p.m. at American Legion Post No. 175 at 832 Manhattan Beach Road, Severna Park. Lure selection, locations, planer boards and ideas for the trophy season will be covered. Planer boards, flags and lures will be available for purchase.

Smallmouth bass

Wednesday, March 20: Mark Fondroff and Brenda Foster will share their knowledge of smallmouth bass fishing on the Potomac River at a meeting of Maryland Trout Unlimited from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Towson Presbyterian Church. The public is welcome.

Terrapins and the Bay

Thursday, March 21: Will Williams, an educator at Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center, will give a free talk about the Chesapeake Bay, its surroundings and the terrapins that inhabit the local waters. 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Terrapin Adventures, 8600 Foundry St., Savage. Light refreshments will be served.

Marathon registration

March 27: The Marine Corps Marathon, which will be run Oct. 27, in Arlington, Va., and around Washington, is opening public registration at noon at Registration for the third-largest U.S. marathon is $99. Active duty and reservists have until midnight next Sunday to receive a 15 percent registration discount.

Gun and outdoor show

April 6: Baltimore County Game & Fish Protective Association will host a gun and outdoor show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on club grounds at 3400 Northwind Road, Carney. Admission $2; children under 12, free. Vendor tables $10. Information: Rick Richmond, 410-335-5994.

Turkey shoot

April 7: Baltimore County Game & Fish Protective Association will host a turkey shoot from noon to 4 p.m. on club grounds at 3400 Northwind Road, Carney. Test your skill. Prizes include turkeys, ham and bacon. Information: Greg, 410-598-4970.

SPURs 5K Run/Walk

April 7: The Hood College Athletics peer mentoring group SPURs (Students Providing Understanding and Resources) will host the 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m. on campus in Frederick. Registration is $15 if postmarked by Friday ($20 after). For information, go to or email

Race for Excellence

April 27: Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association Central Maryland 6th Annual Race For Excellence, 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run. Benefits AFCEA's Central Maryland Scholarship Fund, which provides merit-based college scholarships to local high school students. Thompson Run/Walk

April 28: The 2nd Annual Adam Thompson 5K Run/5K Walk, 8 a.m., Harford Community College, 401 Thomas Run Road in Bel Air. The race honors the memory of a first-year Harford CC student who was killed in an automobile accident in 2011. Mud run

May 5: Terrapin Adventures has partnered with Playworks Baltimore to host a 5K run through the woods of Savage to benefit the nonprofit Playworks Baltimore and its effort to bring safe, meaningful play to Baltimore schools. Registration is $30 before March 15 and $40 after that date. To participate, runners must also raise a minimum of $25 for Playworks Baltimore. For information and to pre-register, go to

Md. Half Marathon

May 11: Registration is open for the fifth annual Maryland Half Marathon to benefit the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center. The race will be in the Maple Lawn community of Howard County. The cost of registration will be $75 until Jan. 31, $85 in February and $90 from March 1 to May 11. The cost of the Dozer's Kids Fun Run is $15. Register at
