For the first time in their young careers, Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman – the club’s top picks in the 2011 and 2012 drafts – pitched in the same game, a 5-2 Orioles’ victory over the Boston Red Sox at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Fla.

Bundy, 20, started, went two innings, allowed one hit, two walks, an unearned run and struck out one batter.

Gausman, 22, pitched three innings, allowed two hits and struck out three including Jonny Gomes twice.

Bundy threw 35 pitches, 18 for strikes, and hit between 91 and 94 with his fastball. He was mainly between 91 and 93. Gausman threw 33 pitches, 25 for strikes, and hit between 92 and 98 with his fastball. He mainly was between 94 and 96.

Here’s what manager Buck Showalter had to say after the game about his two prized prospects.

On Gausman: “You can tell why he is well thought of. He’s also 22 years old out of college, but I thought he presented himself real well tonight. I’m proud of him.”

On whether he is considering giving Gausman a start before he is sent to the minors: “I look at it like he got one tonight, he started an inning and he pitched three innings.”

On Bundy: “He made some good pitches. Some counts got away from him. His command's going to be good. He's got a good delivery.”

On Bundy making the start versus the Red Sox: “I thought it was a good experience for him. The kid's 20 years old. It's a good environment for him to pitch in. Just another step in the process for him.”

On Bundy being ticked about his performance: “He's got a high standard in his mind and I can appreciate him knowing what it needs to be to pitch well here. He probably knows he got away with a little bit.”

On the young duo: “I’m real pleased that both those guys are right where they need to be.”
