GT3 Cup Challenge to run 2 races Labor Day weekend
Organizers of the Grand Prix of Baltimore announced Tuesday that the 2013 event will for the first time showcase the largest single-make series in North America, the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama. The GT3 Cup Challenge is one of three official development series sanctioned by the International Motor Sports Association. Featuring semipro drivers competing in Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars, the series will run two races over Labor Day weekend. The GT3 Cup Challenge events will complement the Grand Prix of Baltimore's two feature races: The American Le Mans Series will run Aug. 31, and the IZOD IndyCar Series will run Sept. 1. The Grand Prix of Baltimore is the first-ever appearance by the GT3 Cup Challenge at a street-course event. The series' two car classes — Platinum and Gold, as well as a Master's Championship for drivers over age 45 — will run simultaneously in each of two races, one on Aug. 31 and one Sept. 1.
BCCC's Maczko named Md. JUCO Coach of Year
Baltimore City Community College coach Terry Maczko was voted Maryland JUCO Coach of the Year after leading the Panthers to the regular-season title with a 14-1 mark. Sean Farr, a Knights sophomore forward, and Kendal Williams, a sophomore point guard, were named to the first team. Farr averaged 13.8 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game while shooting 58.2 percent from the floor. Williams led the top team with 15.0 ppg while handing out 4.8 assists per game.CCBC Dundalk freshman Devin Colston and CCBC Catonsville freshman Quinton Jackson were chosen to the second team. Colston led the conference with 27.1 ppg, and Pope was the conference's top rebounder with 13.8 per game.
Triathlon: TriColumbia announced that the Rocky Gap Triathlon will be held June 1 at Rocky Gap State Park in Flintstone and will benefit the Cumberland YMCA. The triathlon, the ninth race in TriColumbia's 2013 calendar, will offer both an international distance and a sprint triathlon. The international distance triathlon will consist of a 0.93-mile swim, a 22-mile bike ride and a five-mile run, while the sprint triathlon will include a 0.25-mile swim, an eight-mile bike and a 21/2-mile run. Registration is open at TriColumbia.org.
Major League Lacrosse: The league announced Monday that the Hamilton Nationals' home game against the Rochester Rattlers will be played at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla., on June22 at 7:30 p.m. MLL returns to Palm Beach County for the second consecutive year after holding the 2012 All-Star Game there. "Last year was a big step towards getting an expansion franchise in the South Florida area. We have been working hard in the six months since then to make it a reality," said Tony Lowe, director of lacrosse for Elev|8, which is helping hold the event. "Our goal is to grow the game, and nothing would be bigger for our sport than to have a pro team in the hotbed of South Florida." ELEV|8 will also be holding a two-day youth tournament that weekend. The jamboree-style tournament will take place on the fields surrounding the FAU Stadium. Tickets will go on sale March 1 at MLLFla.com. Prices range from $15 to $50 with a limited number of VIP packages available for on-field seating, suites or party bays.
Pro soccer: The Blast's Lucas Roque, who had a pair of goals in a 10-6 victory against Milwaukee on Saturday, was named to the Major Indoor Soccer League Team of the Week. The season continues tonight as the Milwaukee Wave visits the Syracuse Silver Knights at 7 and the Chicago Soul hosts the Missouri Comets at 8. The Soul can clinch the fourth and final playoff berth with a win, while a win for the Comets would clinch the No. 3 seed. ... D.C.United is awaiting word on whether captain Dwayne De Rosario will be punished for an alleged head-butt incident during the preseason finale last weekend against the Philadelphia Union. Also, United has acquired midfielder Marcos Sanchez, 23, on a one-year loan from Panamanian club Tauro. United holds an option to purchase his contract at the end of the season. Sanchez, 23, trained with United for two weeks in Florida. He is a right-sided player and will provide backup for probable starter Nick DeLeon.
