Defenseman Pat Kiernan and goalie Nolan Hickey anchored a strong defensive effort that surrendered just three goals in the first three quarters as the Navy men's lacrosse team beat Detroit, 11-7, on Friday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
It's the first time Navy has started the season 2-0 since 2009, when the Midshipmen beat Virginia Military Institute (13-5) and Ohio State (8-6).
"We had a big defensive effort tonight, and Nolan made some big saves for us," second-year Navy coach Rick Sowell said. "I felt like our defense could match up pretty well against their attack, and we did a nice job of containing them."
Detroit (0-2) took a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the game when senior defenseman Jamie Hebden intercepted a pass from Sam Jones (Severna Park) and ran the length of the field before finding junior attackman Shayne Adams for the first of his game-high four goals.
Navy tied the score just before the quarter break when Jones picked off Titans goalie Chris Kelly right in front of Detroit's goal and Kelly grabbed Navy's Tucker Hull. The official whistled Kelly for the hold and Jones quickly took the ball and fed Hull, who scored with 1:20 to go in the quarter.
The Mids scored the first two goals of the second quarter, including one by Gabe Voumard, who fired a shot from 12 yards out to give Navy a 3-1 advantage.
No. 5 North Carolina 9, No. 16 Towson 6: The visiting Tigers (0-1) drew within one goal of the Tar Heels (1-1), but North Carolina scored three of the final four goals to pull away.
Jackie LaMonica (Hereford) and Sarah Maloff (South River) each scored twice for Towson, which trailed 5-3 at halftime.
No. 6 Duke 18, Richmond 10: The Spiders (0-2) lost their second straight to an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent. Makenzie Hommel scored five goals, and Brigid Smith and Taylor Trimble each scored four for the host Blue Devils (3-0).
Richmond lost, 20-7, to No. 4 Maryland on Sunday.
Off the field
Host Washington & Lee forfeited its women's season opener, which was scheduled for today against St. Mary's.
Coach Brooke Diamond O'Brien cited the suspension of several players, injuries and illness as reasons for the forfeit.
