Rabil scores first as a Wing in 16-8 loss to Roughnecks
Paul Rabil (Johns Hopkins) scored his first goal as a member of the Philadelphia Wings, then added two more, but the hosts lost to the Calgary Roughnecks, 16-8, before an announced 15,103 on Sunday at Wells Fargo Center. The Wings (2-2) were held scoreless in the first quarter and trailed 8-2 at the half. Rabil, a transition player, added a pair of assists. Drew Westervelt (UMBC) scored a goal for the Wings, and fellow forward Kevin Buchanan (Calvert Hall) finished with three assists. The Roughnecks improved to 2-2 in the National Lacrosse League.
More NLL results: Westervelt scored the tying goal with 43 seconds left, but Luke Wiles answered 19 seconds later on a power play to give the host Buffalo Bandits a 14-13 win before an announced 13,808 at First Niagara Center Saturday night. Goalie Anthony Cosmo stopped Wings forward Kevin Ross on the doorstep with four seconds left to secure the win for Buffalo (3-1). Westervelt finished with six points on three goals and three assists, while Buchanan chipped in a goal and four assists. Rabil and defenseman Kyle Hartzell (Salisbury) added an assist apiece for Philadelphia. The teams were tied at 3 after the first quarter and 8 at halftime. ... Forward John Grant Jr., who also plays for the Chesapeake Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse, scored a team-high three goals and added two assists, but the host Colorado Mammoth (1-2) lost, 19-12, to the Roughnecks on Friday night before an announced 15,103 at Pepsi Center. Grant took a game-high 19 shots.
