State Police said Sunday that a Montgomery County man died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound during a traffic stop on Friday.

The man, the driver of the 1997 Ford Focus, was identified as Jermaine T. Jackson, 27, of the 100 block of Lazy Hollow Drive in Gaithersburg.

State police said the incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m.  Jan. 18, on Interstate 270 in Rockville, when a trooper saw the driver of the Ford Focus without a seatbelt and pulled him over.

As the trooper exited his vehicle, he heard a gun shot and  called for assistance, police said. The trooper gave verbal commands to the driver but he did not respond.

After backup arrived, troopers approached the car and found driver unresponsive and with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his upper torso.  Troopers observed a handgun near the center console of the car.

Emergency medical personnel from Montgomery County Fire Department pronounced him dead at the scene.

His body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy.  State police said its homicide unit is investigating.
