The first-place Blast opened 2013 with a convincing 17-4 win over the host Rochester Lancers on Tuesday to become the first Major Indoor Soccer League team to 10 wins this season. In a game that featured 19 penalty minutes, Blast rookie Lucas Roque led the way with two goals and goalkeeper William Vanzela made 14 saves in his league-leading sixth victory of the season. Marco Mangione opened the scoring midway through the first quarter, and Roque scored the next two, giving the Blast a 6-0 lead after one quarter. The second quarter featured three-point goals from Machel Millwood and Lucio Gonzaga 20 seconds apart as well as 15 penalty minutes. The Blast earned nine of the penalty minutes, with seven going to Millwood. MISL leading scorer Doug Miller put the Lancers (5-7) on the scoreboard late in the first half to cut the Blast lead to 12-2. After a scoreless third quarter, Miller made it 12-4, but Adriano Dos Santos and Mike Lookingland scored late. The Blast (10-2) will return to 1st Mariner Arena on Friday and Saturday night to host the Lancers.

Men's college basketball: Sophomore guard Nick LaGuerre (Lansdowne) scored a career-high 36 points in helping St. Mary's (11-1) to a 99-69 win over Huntingdon on the first day of the Morris Cregger New Year's Invitational at Roanoke. The Seahawks will face the hosts in today's championship.
