Getting guns off the street is the first step toward preventing another Newtown

December 29, 2012

Former Baltimore City Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III recently wrote a focused commentary on the gun violence issue that he knows all too well ("What must be done," Dec. 26).

The points he focuses on are: Banning the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines; giving licensed medical professionals access to gun registration data; holding criminals accountable for gun crimes; and investing in mental health treatment for troubled children.

It is the easy availability of guns that most contributes to these tragic mass killings. We have to do what will help immediately, and since we can't cure mental instability right away that means getting these weapons off the streets.

We cannot stop all the tragic individual and mass killings of people. But we must try to stop the carnage or we will become a pariah nation in the world community regarding gun violence. If other countries can limit the carnage, so can we.
