Why taxes drove me from the Republican Party

December 13, 2012

A few days ago, I changed my voter registration to "unaffiliated" after having been a Republican for almost 50 years. Why? Simple. The GOP is being grossly irresponsible in not supporting more taxes on the wealthy. And I'm not talking about income redistribution. I'm talking about wealth.

I have worked all my life as a teacher, and I have worked harder than even Bill "You know that" O'Reilly. I live modestly, and all I want from the government is my Social Security and my Medicare. I don't regard either as a gratuitous entitlement. Those whose wealth was gained because of the opportunities available in America owe the country a dividend for having those opportunities. You know that.
