Holiday ornaments

Blue Christmas

First United Methodist Church of Laurel offers a quiet, somber service at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at 424 Main St. in Laurel. The service is for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one, or suffering separation or divorce, the loss of a job, or the inability to conceive a child. Scripture, music and meditations focus on the comfort God offers during the dark times. Information: 301-725-3093.

Breakfast with Santa

The Southeastern Howard/Laurel Chapter of the Continentals sponsors "Breakfast with Santa" at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at the North Laurel Community Center, 9411 Whiskey Bottom Road. For cost and more information, call 443-529-5377.

Saturday night movies

The North Laurel Community Center screens "Home Alone" (rated PG) at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at 9411 Whiskey Bottom Road in Laurel. The cost is $4 per person, $2 for center members, and includes popcorn and a drink. Information: 410-313-0390.

Bluegrass music

Laurel's mill history

"True Life: I'm a Laurel Mill Worker" is on view at the Laurel Museum, 817 Main St. The exhibit explores Laurel's history as a mill town and the community's early growth. Using an 1870s family to tell the story, it introduces visitors to the lives and experiences of the hundreds of men, women and children who worked in the town's cotton mills between the 1830s and 1929.  The exhibit includes artifacts, diaries, photos and a re-created millworker's home. Admission is free. Hours are 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays.

Montpelier Mansion, 9650 Muirkirk Road, Laurel, has changed its tour times. New times are:

•Self-guided: year-round, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Thursdays-Tuesdays.
