November 18, 2012|Staff Reports

State Police said Sunday evening that they have arrested and charged a Carroll County man in connection with the shooting of his apparent girlfriend this morning.

Maryland State Police investigators have charged William R. Brueckmann, 26, of the 6800 block of John Pickett Road, Woodbine, with attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and felony gun charges.

He is currently being held at the Carroll County Detention Center.

Police said the victim is a 21-year-old woman who lived at the same address. She was in critical condition at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center as of Sunday evening, police said.

According to a police press release, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at about 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 18 from someone who reported hearing a gunshot at a nearby residence.

When state troopers and deputies arrived, the suspect was found in the backyard of the residence holding the victim, who was lying on the ground, police said.

Officers determined the woman had sustained a gunshot wound, and called for emergency medical personnel. The victim was flown by State Police helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma.

Police believe the two  lived together at the residence, and an argument had taken place between them. Brueckmann was taken into custody and was later charged after consultation with the Carroll County State's Attorney's Office.

Police investigators remained on the scene Sunday evening, processing evidence after obtaining a search warrant.  Police reorted that a handgun was recovered inside the home, and it would be sent to the Forensic Sciences Division laboratory for tests.
